l’exposition pendant quelques jours.

WOMEN IN PARIS

WOMEN – EXHIBITION IN PARIS

Paris 3 October – 2 November 2009

Having presented his portraits of women in Brazil, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Cambodia, India, Belgium, Britain and other countries, JR is showing the whole of his «Women» exhibition for the first time.
After «Portraits of a Generation», inspired by events in the suburbs of Paris, and «Face 2Face», which was displayed in the Middle East, «Women» is the third phase of the 28 Millimetre project, taking its name from the wide-angle lens that requires the photographer to be only centimetres from the model in order to take the portrait.
WOMEN ARE HEROES
WOMEN grew out of many pictures and few words. JR’s words were necessary, of course, to convince more than 70 women around the world to take part in the project. JR went to meet those living in the shadows, the real pillars of their societies despite daily violence, wars or simply discrimination. His desire to shift certain limits by using unusual places allows him to deal with subjects in the news in an innovative way. From 3 October to 2 November, through thris exhibition and a book, people will learn all about this adventure that took JR to ten countries on four continents.

The exhibition has been conceived as a journey through Paris in the open air. Visitors can see it on foot, on bicycle or by riverboat.

- Around the Ile Saint-Louis, from 3 October to 2 November

Portraits, studies and other photos from the WOMEN project will be pasted up, particularly on bridges, the embankments and a City of Paris building. Some posters are anamorphic, making the image suitable for viewing from the embankment opposite. Using a «street audio guide» system, passers-by can dial a free number from their mobile phones, to hear interviews with these women and their life-stories.

- Exhibition at the Pavillon de l’Arsenal, from 3 to 23 October
Inside the oldest house of the world’s oldest favela, which JR dismantled and brought from Rio during his activities there in April 2009, two video installations will look back over the whole project.

- Town Hall in the IVth district, on 3 October, for the «Nuit Blanche 2009»
Placed at the centre of the courtyard, the public will be surrounded by grimacing faces and the watchful eyes of women. This set-up offers hitherto unseen pictures and sequences of what JR has been doing in this project since 2007.

Magnus Stark-Photography

EXHIBITION ANNOUNCEMENT:

MAGNUS STARK
Photography
October 15 – November 7, 2009
Reception: Saturday, October 11, 4-7pm

517 S. Sierra Madre Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91107
Phone: (626) 356-2408
E-mail: director@hausgallery.com
Web site: http://www.hausgallery.com
Gallery hours, Thursday – Saturday, noon to 5pm

On Sunday, October 11th, a solo exhibition by MAGNUS STARK will begin the 7th year of exhibitions at HAUS with a preview reception for the artist from 4 to 7 p.m.

In this exhibition Stark explores the fringes of photography by creating images without a camera, light, lenses or enlargers. Each of Stark’s one-of-a-kind images begins as an unexposed sheet of Polaroid film, which he treats as a blank slate, a tabula rasa. The emulsion of this cellulose “canvas” is then chemically manipulated to summon his compositions from the primordial “id.” According to Stark, the process is essentially one of distillation that plays out for hours, days, and sometimes weeks as he “exposes” the images. At a certain point the image is fixed with his scanner and then processed with Photoshop.

This highly personal, symbiotic, digital/alchemical combination produces unpredictable, enigmatic and provocative images that conjure microscopic life-forms, topographic details and far-flung planetary constellations.

Magnus Stark was born in Sweden and now lives and works in Pasadena. He received his BA in Communications from the University of Washington and has been in various group exhibitions in the Los Angeles area. This will be Stark’s first solo exhibition.

Name: Chinmaya Dunster

 Where are you based?

 Goa, India

What kind of films do you make? How would you describe what you do?

Short documentaries on Indian environmental/social issues using my original music as background.

Who or what inspired you to work with film and why cover nature and conservation issues?

Dr Erach Bharucha on Bhartiya Vidyapeeth Institute of Environmental Education and Research, Pune has been my guide to India’s environmental problems and inspired me to blend my music with film to help raise awareness. Nature has always been my main source of inspiration since my rural childhood in England.

What is the favourite film you’ve worked on?

My “Smiles From Off The Road in India” series was the most fun for me to shoot and edit and is still the most fun for me to watch again and again. These are people who have almost nothing in material terms, but still have their smiles. We all have something to learn from them.

What has been your biggest challenge filming in the field?

Terrain: having the camera ready and operational in jungles, snowfields and crowds!

How has technology changed your job? Has it hindered or enhanced telling the conservation story?

The web has given me an audience I would otherwise never have had.

What is your favourite place in nature?

A river valley in deep forest. I can think of so many here in India. I’m just back from the Sarayu River at the edge of Nanda Devi National Park, so that one is uppermost in my mind right now.

From your field experience, what is your biggest concern when it comes to the environment?

The conflict between people’s justified demand for higher living standards and the fact that, under current development paradigms, this can only be met in remote places by unsustainable extraction from Nature.

How do you think the media industry should be addressing environment and conservation issues?

I am trying to find an answer to this myself! The basic principle I work under is how to get people to care. They will only to this once they are touched by Nature’s beauty and fragility. And once they appreciate that all  humans are worthy of a decent standard of living.

If you could give one message to G8 leaders on climate change, what would it be?

Have the guts to be unpopular! Risk losing the next election! LEAD on climate change.

What are you working on at the moment?

A documentary report on using pine needles from the Himalayan chir pine forests as fuel for gasification plants in three small villages near Almora, Uttarakhand. This will not only provide cooking gas/electricity to the villagers, but will support regeneration of the natural oak forest through removal of the highly combustible pine needle litter from the forest floor.

 Where are you going next?

Ranthanbore National Park, Rajasthan to film handicraft development amongst the local people who have been displaced from their forest livelihoods by the creation of the Park.

What would you like to remembered for?

 Spreading laughter and celebration!
