To Protest Craigslist at their San Francisco Headquarters

The Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW) in partnership with Prostitution Research and Education (PRE) and other co-sponsors will be holding a protest in front of Craigslist Headquarters in San Francisco on July 8th to bring attention to Craigslist’s facilitation of and profiting from sex trafficking. “Craigslist continues to cynically profit by functioning as an online pimp,” says Norma Ramos, Executive Director of CATW. “Craigslist is the new stroll where pimps traffic, johns buy and Craigslist profits,” says Melissa Farley, Executive Director, PRE.

Craigslist is projected to realize a 22% increase in revenue – an estimated $36 million in 2010 – largely attributable to its functioning as a virtual red light district for pimps/traffickers and johns. Craigslist displays a reckless disregard for human rights by increasingly becoming a part of the sex industry. Craigslist could act to create a sex trafficking free internet by no longer hosting prostitution ads and thereby setting an industry standard.

We invite you to join CATW, PRE and our co-sponsors who include: Gloria Steinem, Breaking Free, A Call to Men, Equality Now, End Child Prostitution and Trafficking (ECPAT-USA), and many others at our protest to hold Craigslist accountable for facilitating and profiting from the rank exploitation of others.

Speakers Include:

* Joy Friedman, Women’s Program Manager, Breaking Free
* Victor Malarek, Author/Activist, The Natashas and The Johns
* Aaron Cohen, Author/Activist, Slave Hunter
* Terria Joseph, Actor

When: Thursday, July 8, 2010, 12:00 – 2:00 PM

Where: Craigslist Headquarters

1381 9th Avenue (Between Judah and Irving Streets)

San Francisco, CA 94122

Tibetan filmmaker sentenced to 6 years..HELP Dhondup NOW!

We’ve just learned that Dhondup Wangchen, the Tibetan filmmaker
who made the remarkable documentary “Leaving Fear Behind,” has
been sentenced to a six-year prison term. According to Radio

statement based on information they received from Tibet. Read
the statement here:

While we are saddened by this news, we believe that
international pressure is making a difference in his case. It
appears that Dhondup Wangchen is trying to appeal his sentence,
so it is critical that we keep the pressure on.

Grilled Chicken Lawsuit Accuses McDonald’s of Serving Cancer-Causing Meat

A new class-action lawsuit filed Wednesday in Connecticut alleges McDonald’s, Burger King and Friendly’s failed to warn customers that their grilled chicken could cause cancer.

The suit, filed by two Connecticut residents in the Superior Court of the State of Connecticut: Judicial District of Hartford, claims the chains failed to warn consumers that they’re serving grilled poultry containing the compound PhIP, which the state of California considers to be a carcinogen. A similar lawsuit filed in California last month against KFC targeted the Colonel’s Kentucky Grilled Chicken.

The Cancer Project, the nonprofit that filed the suit on behalf of the residents, says eating PhIP — even in small amounts — can increase one’s risk of cancer.

“Consumers deserve to know that grilled chicken from McDonald’s and other fast-food chains can increase your risk of cancer,” Cancer Project President Dr. Neal D. Barnard said in a statement. “Even a grilled-chicken salad increases the risk of developing some cancers, including breast and prostate cancer.”

But a McDonald’s spokeswoman said customer “safety and well-being” is a “top priority.”

“Scientific research shows that PhIP is naturally occurring, and is created when chicken is grilled — whether at home — or in a restaurant. It may be present at low concentrations in oven-broiled, pan-fried, and grilled meats, as a result of normal cooking,” Cynthia Goody, McDonald’s nutrition director, said. “There is no scientific evidence to suggest the small amount of PhIP that can be created as a by-product of cooking methods humans have employed for thousands of years, poses a health risk.

“Like other restaurant companies and food establishments, at McDonald’s, we continue to look to the FDA and USDA for their guidance on PhIP,” her statement continued. “Beyond that, because this is a pending legal matter, it would be inappropriate to further comment or speculate.”

Peta and farm animals!

http://www2.peta.org/site/R?i=iJA-rhcG0Ev90NsQIji91w..We’re almost there.

We need your help immediately to reach our final online Factory Farming Challenge goal of $240,000. Your donation right now, along with the thousands of others matched dollar-for-dollar by the generous PETA donors responsible for this challenge, will help us raise almost half a million dollars, which will go to support our crucial work for animals on factory farms and in slaughterhouses.

For the last few weeks, I’ve been telling you how PETA relies on the resources that supporters like you provide to expose and combat the suffering of billions of individual chickens, turkeys, cows, pigs, and other animals on factory farms and in slaughterhouses. What we’ve accomplished for these animals recently has been stunning:

  • Our investigation of turkey factory farms in West Virginia owned by Aviagen, the self-proclaimed world’s leading poultry breeding company, led to the first convictions in U.S. history of turkey factory farm workers on cruelty to animals charges. Cases like these send a powerful message to others in the industry that the abuse of these animals will not go unpunished.
  • Our work with Burger King, Wendy’s, Popeyes, and other fast-food chains is pushing them to switch to “controlled-atmosphere killing,” a process that can eliminate the worst abuses that millions of individual chickens normally endure during the slaughter process.
  • Our undercover exposé of the horrific conditions at a Pennsylvania dairy factory farm that supplies Land O’Lakes—a farm where we documented that lame cows were kicked, stabbed in the spine with a pocketknife, and electro-shocked—is helping to awaken the public to the suffering of cows routinely abused for their milk. It also led to the rescue of Jerry and Peter, two calves who are now at a peaceful sanctuary.

Worldbank withdraws loan to cattle giant…. slaughtering of the Amazon!

Investment driving Amazon destruction and fueling climate change

June 13,2009
São Paulo, Brazil — The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private lending arm of the World Bank, has withdrawn a $90 million dollar loan to Brazil’s cattle giant Bertin. The loan was used for the company to further expand into the Amazon region, which was causing destruction of the rainforest and fueling global climate change.
“It is good news that the World Bank is withdrawing these funds yet scandalous that it was feeding Bertin, which is a company that drives Amazon deforestation and climate change. The World Bank must now guarantee that it will not fund deforestation of the Amazon and other damaging projects in the future,” said Paulo Adario, Greenpeace Brazil’s Amazon campaign director.

The move comes two weeks after the Greenpeace released its report, “Slaughtering the Amazon” (1). The report revealed how the financial backing of the Brazilian cattle industry by the IFC and President Lula’s government via its national development bank (BNDES) has led the industry to become the largest single source of deforestation in the world and a major source of global greenhouse gas emissions. The report also shows how cattle products from ranches involved in illegal deforestation in the Amazon rainforest –as well as in the invasion of indigenous lands and slavery–contaminates the whole supply chains of top brands such as Adidas, Reebok, Timberland, Geox, Clarks, Nike, Carrefour, Gucci, IKEA, Kraft, and Wal-Mart.

By helping Bertin to expand into the Amazon, the IFC has been driving further destruction of the rainforest for products that often make their way into global meat or leather products while undermining Brazil’s commitments to reducing deforestation. For a bank that portrays itself as the “knowledge bank”, this was a very ill conceived and thoroughly destructive use of international resources. The last $30 million dollar hand-out from the IFC will no longer be given to Bertin and it is anticipated that the IFC will ask Bertin to return early the $60 million dollars it has already invested in the company. The World Bank Group is set to lend another $1.3 billion dollars to Brazil for “environmental protection.”

Forest destruction accounts for almost 20 percent of global warming causing emissions, which is more climate pollution than all the world’s cars, trucks, trains, planes, and ships combined. Brazil ranks as the world’s fourth biggest climate polluter, largely because of Amazon destruction.

Greenpeace is calling for Zero Deforestation and global solutions to deforestation as a way of reducing forest related emissions that are making global warming worse. The Greenpeace Forests for Climate proposal for a hybrid market-linked fund would provide the financing needed to help protect the world’s remaining tropical forests, like the Amazon, by reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries. McDonalds UN-Happy meals!

Inside PETA’s Unhappy Meal

McDonald’s markets its food to children in brightly colored “Happy Meals,” but most kids would lose their lunch if they knew about the animal suffering that goes into them. Unhappy Meals make sure that families know that the lives of the chickens who were killed for McNuggets were anything but happy.
